BIG NEWS! Welcome to our new website!

Our redesigned site is familiar yet nicely enhanced with a fresh look, and layout on every page and click. Be sure to take a bit of time to explore and enjoy our new site. There are a number of exciting new features, such as this Greetings from the Crew section, as well as so many wonderful photos captured in the new Member Events Photo Gallery and new Member Photos Gallery. You will enjoy the added opportunity to always have at hand our Upcoming Member Program details. We also streamlined the event and membership registrations and the associated registration forms. While we were at it, we have even added a new “shopping cart” experience within the website and more. Go explore!

As compared to our previous site, this new platform is significantly more reliable and performs more smoothly on all device types. It has been built for improved speed. It has also been built to increase interactivity with our members and visitors. Importantly, we did not remove any features or elements that were available on our last website; we only enhanced them for appearance and function. You will still enjoy our current and archived PORTHOLES, PONY Cruise Schedules, and our collection of Featured Articles.

As a first-time website builder, I am incredibly grateful for this new website developer-friendly platform, which allowed me to share it with you, our members, in about two months, a record time! Thank you to Pat Dacey and Stewart Gewirtzman who contributed their time and expertise to this effort.

The Adriatic Affair | A Maritime Hit-and-Run Off the Coast of Nantucket

The American sailing vessel ADRIATIC collided with the French steamship LE LYONNAIS on November 2, 1856, off the coast of Nantucket in what can best be described as a maritime hit-and-run. ADRIATIC’s captain, Jonathan Durham, rendered no aid and left the passenger steamship to fend for herself. One hundred and fourteen people died in the collision and in the days that followed.

Durham did not count on a hero, French sailor Jean-Marie-Louis Choupault, who helped 18 LE LYONNAIS passengers and crew adrift on a small lifeboat in the brutal North Atlantic. Durham continued with business as usual, including delivering a load of timber to France. French authorities seized his ship as damages and put him on trial, but his adventures did not end there. News of his escapades made Durham a celebrity in America. The outbreak of the Civil War ended further inquiry into what became known in diplomatic circles as “The Adriatic Affair,” and the victims of the disaster never received justice.

In August of 2024, Jennifer, her partner Joe Mazraani, and a team of explorers discovered, dived, and identified the wreckage of LE LYONNAIS on the eastern edges of Georges Bank. Jennifer also chronicles what it takes to chase shipwrecks far from shore in the often-punishing North Atlantic, the search for and discovery of LE LYONNAIS, and how it changed their lives.

Jennifer N. Sellitti is a shipwreck hunter, and USCG-licensed ship captain. A criminal defense attorney by profession, she spends her spare time locating, diving, and salvaging shipwrecks aboard D/V TENACIOUS, a dive vessel that she ran with her life partner in life, Captain Joe Mazraani, before his recent tragic death during a July 2025 expedition to document the Georges Bank Shipwrecks. The Adriatic Affair is Jennifer’s first book.
