BIG NEWS! Welcome to our new website!

Our redesigned website is familiar yet nicely enhanced with a fresh look, and layout on every page. Be sure to take a bit of time to explore and enjoy our new site.

There are several exciting new features starting with our Home page, like this Greetings from the Crew section, as well as so many wonderful photos captured in the new Member Events Photo Gallery and new Member Photos Gallery. The Upcoming Member Program section on our Home page now includes a full program description. We also streamlined the member and event registrations and added a new “shopping cart” experience. Go explore!

Compared to our previous site, this new platform is significantly more reliable and faster. It has also been built to increase interactivity with our members and visitors. Additionally, we enhanced current and archived PORTHOLES, PONY Cruise Schedules, and our collection of Featured Articles for access, appearance and function.

As a first-time website builder, I am incredibly grateful for this new website developer-friendly platform, which allowed me to share it with you, our members, in a record time of about two months! Thank you to Pat Dacey and Stuart Gewirtzman who contributed their time and expertise to this effort.

The Adriatic Affair | A Maritime Hit-and-Run Off the Coast of Nantucket

The American sailing vessel ADRIATIC collided with the French steamship LE LYONNAIS on November 2, 1856, off the coast of Nantucket in what can best be described as a maritime hit-and-run. ADRIATIC’s captain, Jonathan Durham, rendered no aid and left the passenger steamship to fend for herself. One hundred and fourteen people died in the collision and in the days that followed.

Durham did not count on a hero, French sailor Jean-Marie-Louis Choupault, who helped 18 LE LYONNAIS passengers and crew adrift on a small lifeboat in the brutal North Atlantic. Durham continued with business as usual, including delivering a load of timber to France. French authorities seized his ship as damages and put him on trial, but his adventures did not end there. News of his escapades made Durham a celebrity in America. The outbreak of the Civil War ended further inquiry into what became known in diplomatic circles as “The Adriatic Affair,” and the victims of the disaster never received justice.

In August of 2024, Jennifer Sellitti, her partner Joe Mazraani, and a team of explorers discovered, dived, and identified the wreckage of LE LYONNAIS on the eastern edges of Georges Bank. In her presentation, Jennifer chronicles what it takes to chase shipwrecks far from shore in the often-punishing North Atlantic, the search for and discovery of LE LYONNAIS, and how it changed their lives.

Jennifer N. Sellitti is a shipwreck hunter, and USCG-licensed ship captain. A criminal defense attorney by profession, she spends her spare time locating, diving, and salvaging shipwrecks aboard Diving Vessel TENACIOUS.‍ ‍The Adriatic Affair is Jennifer’s first book.

Utilize these schedules to plan ship photography, witness historic maiden voyages (noted on the schedules), and track fleet movements throughout the seasons.
