The year is quickly coming to a close. Yet, before the year entirely gets away from us, below are three important WSS-PONY Branch “to-do’s.”

Join your fellow members and register now for the WSS-PONY Branch 2026 Holiday Party which will take place at Tony’s Di Napoli Upper West Side location on Sunday, January 3, 2027, 4-6:30PM. Sssssh! Here is a secret… We have confirmed a 2027 ship visit and luncheon aboard a ship never before visited by the WSS-PONY Branch. Details about the ship visit and luncheon will follow at a later date. To be able to register for what will be a highly sought-after ship visit and luncheon, attendees must be active members (or a guest of an active member). Patron members will be provided a priority registration window to this and other in-person events. Reflections as Captain of the Cruise Ship Orient Express

Captain Martin Scott will speak about his two-plus years aboard James Sherwood’s MV ORIENT EXPRESS, which operated as an express cruise ferry in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and the Canary Isles from 1986 to 1991.

As reference, after being purchased by Sea Containers the former SILJA STAR was rebuilt and in April 1986 she re-emerged as MS ORIENT EXPRESS and started sailing on a route connecting Venice, Pireus, and Istanbul. Between December 1986 and April 1987, the ship was chartered to Club Sea Inc. who used her for cruising in the Caribbean as MS CLUB SEA. After the charter she returned to her previous name and route until 1989 when she was chartered to Europe Cruise Line as EUROSUN for cruising on the Mediterranean. In December of the same year Europe Cruise Line bought the ship, but in May 1990 she was chartered back to Sea Containers, again renamed ORIENT EXPRESS and set on the Venice—Istanbul service.

Captain Scott enjoyed a long and varied career at sea, covering 45 years. He has commanded over 20 ships, from passenger ferries and express passenger liners to cruise ships and research ships.

Complementing his merchant navy career, he served for 37 years in the Royal Naval Reserve. He attained the rank of Captain and sailed on minelayers, frigates, aircraft carriers, and assault landing ships with many exercises to northern Norway, the Mediterranean, and across the Atlantic Ocean.

Martin is a Younger Brother of Trinity House and in 2008 he was awarded the Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service.

The Passenger Ship Arrivals and Departures Schedules serve as a premier maritime resource tracking passenger ships visiting New York and New Jersey ports.

Designed for ship enthusiasts, historians, and local maritime spotters, the logs provide an easily filterable set of tables organized by year to include all 2026 schedules. Utilize these schedules to plan ship photography, witness historic maiden voyages (noted on the schedules), and track fleet movements throughout the seasons.
